Spiritual direction is a practice found in a variety of historical traditions (e.g., Western Christianity, Eastern Orthodoxy, Judaism, and Sufism), but is most commonly associated with Catholicism. The purpose of spiritual direction (also known as spiritual companionship and spiritual guidance) is for a director to be with those who are seeking to deepen their spirituality and relationship with the Divine. Through the process of self-reflection and spiritual guidance, a spiritual director helps individuals become who they were meant to be.
