At a Retreat, a Zen Monk Plants the Seeds of Peace

First came the clear, resonant sound of the bell, a shining brass bowl held delicately on the fingertips of a Buddhist nun. Then came the sound of more than 500 people rhythmically inhaling and exhaling, among them a contingent of American Vietnam veterans, a large number of psychotherapists and social workers, and Jewish students of Zen Buddhism who gathered for a Rosh ha-Shanah service between meditation sessions.
